Memorial Day events across Southeast Queens will once again bring residents together to honor the service members who gave their lives defending the country, with several civic organizations, veterans groups and community leaders organizing parades and wreath-laying ceremonies throughout the holiday weekend.

The American Legion and its Auxiliary will partner with the 149th Street Civic Association and the 148th Street Block Association to host their second annual wreath-laying ceremony at Baisley Pond Park on Saturday, May 23, beginning at 11 a.m. The ceremony will take place near the intersection of 125th Avenue and 154th Street in Jamaica.

Additional organizations participating in the event include the 116th Avenue Block Association, the National Association of Black Military Women, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, the United Neighbors Civic Association of Jamaica and the South Jamaica Infinity Garden.

Memorial Day observances will continue Monday morning with the 37th annual Laurelton Memorial Day Parade stepping off promptly at 9 a.m. The parade route will begin at Francis Lewis Boulevard and Merrick Boulevard before proceeding to the Veterans Memorial Triangle at 225th Street and North Conduit Avenue.

This year’s parade is expected to feature performances and appearances from the New York Alliance Drumline, the Medical Cadet Corps 2nd Battalion, the Queens Area Pathfinder Federation and the Queens Area Adventurer Federation.

Following the Laurelton ceremony, another wreath-laying tribute will be held at Veterans Park in Queens Village beginning at 11 a.m. The event is being organized by the Queens Village Civic Association alongside American Legion Post 301 and will take place at Jamaica Avenue and Springfield Boulevard.

Later that morning, the Rosedale Civic Association will host its annual Memorial Day Parade beginning at 11:30 a.m. The procession will start at 243rd Street and Mayda Road before continuing toward Memorial Square near Sunrise Highway, where wreaths will be placed in remembrance of fallen veterans.

A reception is scheduled afterward at Diamond Renaissance Banquet Hall.

Organizers said this year’s celebration received support from Selvena Brooks-Powers, Khaleel Anderson and Queens College. Entertainment will include performances by the Bartlett Contemporaries and music from Deejay Hunter of Irie Jam Radio.
